Welcome to the website of the South West Victoria Biochar Action Group

The South West Victoria Biochar Action Group (SWVBAG) is an open forum of like-minded persons and organisations, with the aim of investigating the technology related to and use of biochar and associated energy products in the region.

Biochar is the carbon-rich solid product resulting from heating natural organic materials such as crop waste, woodchips, manure or other organic waste, in a high temperature oxygen-limited environment.

Biochar is considered a very stable form of carbon, and as such the SVWBAG considers that it can potentially provide a range of benefits to the region of South West Victoria. These include improved agricultural production through incorporation into degraded soils, and long term carbon storage to help tackle climate change. More about us >>
